More than 7,000 people from northeastern Burma are facing a food shortage.
Thanks to your support, there is hope.
Already, 500 people have received a one-month supply of rice. That means 500 people were spared from hunger. And 500 men, women and children will experience God’s love.
But 6,500 are still hungry. With your continued help, we can send them food too. A $50 gift will feed a family of 5 for one month.
You can help change this situation now.
Pray for the families at risk and give an emergency gift to stop this crisis. We are coordinating the relief effort with the Committee for Internally Displaced Karen People (CIDKP), Shan State leaders, and the Free Burma Rangers.
This recent crisis is the result of two phenomenon:
Bizarre weather patterns this past farming season have over-saturated crops. Burma Army patrols have prevented farmers from tending their fields. As a result, weeds and animals are overtaking many rice patties. In addition, the military junta is increasing violence and pressure on pro-democracy groups in anticipation of the 2010 elections. Thousands of people are being displaced and denied food.
The Nobel Peace prize laureate and freely elected leader of Burma, Aung Sang Suu Kyi, is banned from the elections. She has been under house arrest since her party, the National League for Democracy, was elected in 1990. Her sentence was set to expire this month.
Suu Kyi was re-arrested in June when Missouri man John Yettaw flew to Burma and illegally swam to her lakeside home. The 64 year-old leader is blamed for the incident - she has been sentenced to 3 more years of hard labor.

This enables doctors at the unit to link up with a consultant based at the local centre of excellence in Oxford, and to receive a swift diagnosis of a problem. The system is most frequently used when scanning a baby's heart. To receive a quick and accurate diagnosis the paedia-cardiologists at the special unit in Oxford can be consulted almost immediately.
